Standards and learning environments

From: Karen Bonanno

The American Association of School Librarian’s Standards for the 21st-Century Learner provides a solid base on which to consider the types of learning environments that will be needed to accommodate the lifelong learning experiences of our students.

Inquiry based learning requires an information rich environment in a physical and virtual sense.

The Australian School Library Association’s Standards of Professional Excellence for Teacher Librarians provides the focus for having fully qualified personnel in a school library who bring accomplished teaching and librarianship capabilities to strongly support the learning programs.

Inquiry based learning requires access to fully qualified personnel who bring a range of skills to the teaching and learning process for every student.

A powerful example of the combination of a virtual school library and a qualifed teacher librarian is demonstrated by the work of Joyce Valenza and the Springfield Township High School Virtual Library. Having knowledge commons, technology commons, social commons, etc. provides learning spaces for student collaboration, independent work and access to resources and technology.
